Press Release from Palm Beach Kennel Club

September 11, 2005
Palm Beach Kennel Club Donates $100,000 For Katrina Relief Efforts
West Palm Beach, FL - Palm Beach Kennel Club has pledged at least $100,000 to Hurricane Katrina relief projects.
PBKC will make check presentations to:
The American Red Cross - $36,500
Catholic Charities - $36,500
Greyhound Pets of America / National - $10,000
Support of Night Runners / Convoy of Hope

The Kennel Club donated $17,000 last week to purchase equipment and supplies for the distribution camp. The check was used to buy generators, tents, canopies, fans, shelves, tables & chairs, lights, fencing, grills, icemakers and more. On Saturday night, the NR group set up camp and has been distributing items and serving hot meals to victims’ non-stop.

PBKC is a drop off site for food, supplies and donations. These donations will fuel a distribution camp near Picayune, Mississippi. After just a few days, customers and employees have already contributed $2,570 in cash / checks and 27 cases of water and 25 boxes of food, baby items, and personal items. The funds and items will be delivered to the NR Camp every week or so. These efforts will continue as long as it is necessary.

PBKC Adopts Families

PBKC is looking to help two families who are relocating to PB County through St. Ignatius Outreach. PBKC will assist with rent, utilities, food, etc. and offer employment at the Kennel Club or with business associates. Families who have inquired about assistance are currently being interviewed.

The Kennel Club will continue to monitor relief efforts and assist with projects when there is a need.

Sept. 10
On Thursday, some folks from GPA-Emerald Coast showed up in Mobile with 2,500 lbs of dry food. The Emerald Coast folks delivering the food would not even take money to cover their gas bill. Pretty spectacular of them, and deserving of special recognition.

Sept. 9
Lilla talked to Judi (GPA LA) briefly late yesterday and got a "shopping list", of things Judi needs, including food, heartworm, Flea and other meds for the Greyhounds. Lilla is going to get the supplies from her vet, and take them down to Judi. Lilla's vet will charge a lot less than anyone in Covington.
Judi also needs some of the money to fix some of the fencing to keep the Greys in her yard. Judi is still without power.

GPA National will send a check to cover these expenses.

Sept. 8

On Saturday night, at the GPA Convention in Tampa, $ 5,000 was collected for Hurricane Relief. The money was a combination of cash donations and proceeds from the auctions of Rory's gold GPA ring, a women's diamond ring and "the thong". The money is primarily intended to help Greyhounds affected by Hurricane Katrina in LA, MS and AL. Additional needs are certain develop over the next several weeks and there is the possibility of more Hurricanes hitting Florida and/or the Gulf Coast.

I got an update from Lilla Whitehead with GPA-LA on Thursday morning, September 8th. Lilla is in Baton Rouge and is doing all right. She is grateful for the outpouring of support and offers to help.

Judi McGovern, also with GPA-LA is having more trouble. Judi is on the North Shore and has had wind damage to her home, but fortunately, no water damage. She has been without power since the Katrina hit, but does have a small generator. Cell phone service is very sporadic, so communications are difficult. Judi did lose two of her senior Greyhounds to the heat. I am trying to get through to talk to Judi personally to see what we can do to help.

I also received an update from Gwen Gay of GPA-Southern Alabama on Thursday morning, September 8th. Gwen, her family and Greyhounds are fine, although power and phone service are spotty. Gwen has not had access to email since Katrina hit. The current status at the Mobile track is:
o Over 2,000 pounds of dry food was delivered thanks to the generosity of GPA Emerald Coast and distributed to the kennels. The regular order of meat, some 280 boxes, from Qual-Pet was also delivered and distributed. This should be enough food for all the dogs at the track to last into next week.
o Racing resumed at the track on Wednesday, so the kennels will start receiving purse money next week to pay for their own food going forward.
o Qual-Pet had not sent Gwen in invoice for the meat yet. The normal bill is $2,600, but Qual-Pet has said that they will apply as much discount as they can. The Qual-Pet invoice should arrive Friday or Saturday.
o Gwen has $1,100 in hand that was given to her by GPA at the convention in Tampa, and has received many calls and pledges of additional money.
o Gwen does not want to send out a request for additional money until she gets the Qual-Pet bill. She does not want to be in the position of asking for money only to find she has too much and has to send money back.
o If Gwen needs additional money to cover the Qual-Pet bill, GPA-National will send the money immediately.

We will stay in contact with Lilla, Judi and Gwen to help take care of their needs.

There is a link on the GPA-National website (http://www.greyhoundpets.org/) for anyone who wants to contribute.

Press Release from the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine (Sept. 2, 2005)

Animal Evacuation and Recovery Plan for New Orleans

BATON ROUGE— The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LA/SPCA), the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association (LVMA), the Louisiana Animal Control Association (LACA), and the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) are managing animal evacuations and recovery plans for New Orleans pets and displaced animals.

PETS TRAVELING WITH OWNERS

The LVMA is currently accepting pets at the Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette, LSU in Shreveport, the Monroe Civic Center for small animals and the Ike Hamilton Center for large animals in Monroe, the Farmer’s Market in Alexandria, and the LSU Agriculture Center/Parker Coliseum in Baton Rouge.  Owners must be housed in a Red Cross shelter; owners are responsible for caring for their animals, including feeding and cleaning.  Animals will be accepted 24 hours a day.  Veterinarians will be on hand to handle any medical needs.

While owners are responsible for the feeding and cleaning of their pets at the Parker Coliseum in Baton Rouge, the SVM, along with volunteers from the Baton Rouge Veterinary Medical Association, will provide veterinary care.  If for some reason, an owner is unable to care for a pet sheltered in the Parker Coliseum (e.g., the owner is housed in a special needs shelter), SVM student volunteers will provide primary care, such as feeding and cleaning.  The East Baton Rouge Animal Control Center will be taking stray animals.

The Parker Coliseum will be staffed 24 hours a day by a supervising veterinarian and student volunteers from the School of Veterinary Medicine.  Pets in the Coliseum will be given physical exams and Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccinations.  If a pet requires medical attention and veterinary monitoring, it will be sent to the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

PEOPLE WITH PETS WHO ARE CURRENTLY EVACUATING NEW ORLEANS

The LA/SPCA will transport animals from pick-up points in New Orleans to the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center.  The pick-up points have not yet been determined and are being coordinated with the agency charged with transporting people from New Orleans to other areas.

The Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, 9039 St. Landry Rd., Gonzales, La., will serve as the primary staging area.  Once the shelter is full, animals will be moved to temporary shelters in other areas of Louisiana and Texas.

The LA/SPCA Dorothy Dorsett Mobile Veterinary Center will be at the Lamar-Dixon Center to treat incoming animals as needed.

CONFINED PETS STILL IN DISASTER AREA

Beginning on September 1, residents who left pets in their homes may call a hot line to leave information about the number of animals, species, and their confined location.  As soon as the hotline number is obtained, we will advise the media.  WE CANNOT ENTER NEW ORLEANS UNTIL APPROVAL IS GRANTED BY STATE OFFICALS.

DONATIONS

Financial donations are being accepted to fund the animals’ care through the Dr. Walter J. Ernst, Jr. Veterinary Memorial Foundation at the LVMA at 1-800-928-LVMA.

A regional donation center is being established.  Our needs include:  large air kennels and metal cages, leashes, disposable bowls, canned cat and dog food, disposable litter pans, spray bleach, paper towels, sheets, towels, locks, hoses, bottled water, trash cans, trash bags, pooper scoopers, cat litter, extension cords, fans.  The most urgent needs are kennels and monetary donations.  The media will be advised of the address once determined.  At least 175 animals are currently en route to Baton Rouge.

For more information or to make donations of the materials listed above, please call the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine at 225-578-9900 (www.vetmed.lsu.edu) or the LVMA at 1-800-928-LVMA (www.lvma.org).
